How to Save your Family from Failure, with the Rosary

How to Save your Family from Failure, with the Rosary
by Rita Davidson

When I started out as a new mother, my faith was the last thing on my mind. Growing up in a Catholic home, we went to Sunday Mass each week without fail. But that is where my faith stopped.

Catholic schools in the 60’s, were busy teaching how to love, and be friends and encourage everyone to hug at the middle of Mass. Catechism lessons were unheard of but I have drawings from Grade 5 religion class with a Menorah and other ‘peace’ religion items that today are a shock to my eyes.

This was how I started out with the faith, and once life hit, and adulthood loomed the faith was a fond memory if anything.

Fast forward to a few children later, and the rosary was the first thing I had to teach myself. Saying the rosary was a real effort in humility for me, as it was embarrassing for me to say something that was so foreign to me. But I persevered and we spent many years saying it faithfully. I never said a rosary with my own mother until I was nearly 40 years old. How much of the faith was lost!

Fast forward as our own children got older; the rosary still on my list, but more often forgotten. As our children grew, lives got busier and we started dealing with scrupulous souls, it was hard to see how to fit in more religion when it was already ‘too much’ for some of our children struggling to know God.

Now I look back, with my three oldest children off in the world, without the faith and wonder where did I go wrong?

I tried to make all the right choices, but the devil got the better of me I guess. In hindsight I see how I omitted the most important thing of all, to keep my children in the faith:

The Daily Rosary.

It seemed every time it was time to say the rosary, there was one or another obstacle.

Not able to round everyone up.

Doing errands late at night so rosary got forgotten.

A movie or something put on before the rosary was remembered and got set aside.

Children acting up and not able to settle down.

Having a late supper and by the time that was done, it was forgotten.

And on the excuses went.

While we lead a Catholic life in the day, it was the important grace from the rosary that was missing in our lives. How much I will have to pay for this omission I will never know in this life?  But, I share this if only to save you from the pain I have experienced.

If you are hoping to save your children in this world and get them through to adulthood as Catholics, the rosary cannot be omitted. I cannot say this enough. Our Lady of Fatima came down to remind us. Regardless of the obstacles, a way must be found.

Whether you have to drag your children from all parts of the house.

Or have them all lay on the floor to say it.

Or say it in the car if you can.

Whether you say it while kids are noisy or while some are not around.

Please say it.

While I cannot know all the causes of this breach in our family. I have paid the price from my failure to continue this practice, by being distracted every time it was time for us to say the rosary. I now have a lifetime of sorrow from losing my daughters to the world. Though I have hope that God will find another path for their return, it is my responsibility to pray for that success now.

May you love your children enough, to find a way to embrace them. And more importantly pass on to them the habit of saying the rosary that may one day save them.

What sorrows have you had from neglecting the rosary ? Or what success have you had you can share with me today ?  Does your rosary need dusting off ?

    Dear Rita,
The rosary is so important in this day and age. We must hold on to our devotion to Our Lady or all will be lost. I’m sorry about your daughters but the devil keeps trying to lead us away from that devotion to Our Lady and the world calls so strongly. Our family started early and never neglected our rosary and we still had two of our oldest stray from the faith. Please don’t kick yourself to hard and remember that our Lady will bring them back with all those Rosaries we say now. . God bless you and your family

       Thank you Ninibugs!!
Your story is comforting to say the least. We rarely miss a rosary now, even though two of my disabled boys don’t understand it at all. Truly the world is a challenging place to bring up our children or even to save our own souls! Thank you for sharing your story so others may benefit from hearing it as well.  God bless you too! Thank you Rita. The story you have shared here, I could have written word for word. If only I had known back when my own children were little, this simple truth: the family that prays together stays together. But dear Rita, take heart! We must place all confidence in Our Lady, She will not fail us! The Rosaries we now say will surely return our children to Her Son, what Mother cannot take pity on our beseeching?
In addition to our Rosaries, we must avail of Her Green Scapular. We must say this pray daily on behalf of those who have strayed: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.” It is easy to incorporate this into our daily Rosary. Remember we have the Blessed Virgin’s promises/benefits!
    1. Conversion of those who do not have the faith
    2. Reconciliation to the Church for those who have lost/strayed from the faith
    3. Assurance of a happy death
    4. Strengthening of the faith for those already in the Church
    5. Protection from Satan for those who wear or promote the scapular
    See here: http://www.catholictradition.org/Mary/green-scapular4.htm

You and yours are in my poor prayers, and please pray for me!

Bless you, Rita, for sharing your experience and sorrow. Don’t forget that each individual has free will. From the age of reason, a person decides for themselves. God gives each soul the ability to choose Him. Being a mom to some who have strayed, I understand your pain. Ole Red Legs will not win my children’s souls, as long as there is breath in my body. I battle for them and know God takes my efforts as not only for my children but as atonement for my sins of negligence. We recently began adding after each decade of the rosary “With this decade we bind our family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary”. I send Jesus after my daughters and Mary after my sons. They know I will always be here for them, no matter what has happened. When they are ready they will return. I have faith. I have hope.

This is the most beautiful I’ve ever heard SharonP ! I can’t thank you enough for sharing your insights and your pain as well! So many mothers will be encouraged by your story as well. I too know it’s my duty to pray unceasingly for them that have strayed. We must always have courage to never give up the battle!
May God reward us in the end.
God bless and keep you always,

There is nothing more painful than a child who’s left the Faith. I’ve dealt with the death of my parents (one by cancer, the other by suicide) and as horrific as these were / are … watching my grown child living a life in sin after I’ve spent his entire life watching out for him, guiding and protecting him and praying for him … is the most tremendous heartbreak ever. It’s bad enough that all of our families’ are fallen away or schismatic or atheist … but our formerly bright eyed loving boy is now a cynical worldling.

Thank you for this post and for the other ladies who’ve offered their experiences and advice. I know I’m being called to a greater battle than ever, and I know that all this is for the greater good. Just learning how to live with the pain.

I’m glad your family finally has a home to live in.

    God Bless.

      Lisa,
Oh your story is heartbreaking as well! If we didn’t know that God was taking care of us in the heat of the battle, we would all succumb to despair watching our children fall away from the faith. I only have to look back at my own life and know that God pulled me out of the path I was travelling, while not as bad as some, it sure was worse than others too.
Rest your heart in His Sacred Heart…there is no balm for a hurting heart Lisa…but learning to suffer WITH Him is the greatest lesson I’ve learned and one He wants us all to learn.
      God bless you always,
      Rita Xo 🙂

P.S. The story of your life Rita sounds like the book you need to write. From your childhood, the falling away from the Faith, the building of your family, return to the Faith, homeschooling. publishing business, the trials and tribulations raising your family, your oldest children’s departure and the tragic loss of your home and business, homelessness and now, recovery and rebirth. What an epic story! It reminds me of Job. God Bless.

Awwww Thanks Lisa for your P.S.
I’ve pondered this subject quite a bit…there is more to my life that I haven’t even shared and after our fire, I sure felt close to Job…It made me pick up the Bible to read his story and wow, his story is long and lamenting! 🙂
I’ll write my story if God wants me to write it…only if it gives Him the glory. For now, it’s back to Immodesty, Satan’s Virtue, since He saved that book right from our fire! What a price I paid writing that book! 🙂
      God bless you,
      Rita 🙂
